Introduction

Cara Swit is a PhD candidate in the School of Education, Macquarie University.

Cara Swit holds a MEd from Macquarie University specialising in social development and educational psychology. Cara has worked as a primary school teacher in remote communities and suburban schools around Australia at both primary and middle school levels. She has also spent time working in early childhood intervention assisting families and teachers with the inclusion of children with additional needs. Cara is currently undertaking PhD study at Macquarie University researching the development of aggressive and prosocial behaviours in young children, as well as lecturing and tutoring on a number of Undergraduate Education units.

PHD TITLE: Social and non-social behaviours in pre-schoolers and teacher and parent perceptions about these behaviours

Cara is a recipient of a National Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship.

Research

Cara's research interests are aggressive behaviours in preschool age children, teacher and parent perceptions of aggression, and young children's beliefs and social reasoning about aggression. Beliefs about aggression are predictive of future engagement in aggressive behaviours, however, little is understood about why children use or how they justify such behaviours. Cara's research included the development of a new measure of young children's beliefs and social reasoning about aggression. The new measure identified significant differences between the social reasoning of high and normative aggression groups. Results suggest that this technique has provided substantial and novel insight into young children's social reasoning and reactive behaviours when faced with provocation. A future research goal is to further develop this measure with larger diverse populations of young children. Additional measures of teacher and parent perceptions of different forms of aggression were analysed to determine the impact of these beliefs of children's actual behaviour.
