Institute of Early Childhood

First Year at IEC

Welcome to the Institute of Early Childhood (IEC). At IEC, we understand that starting university can be both an exciting and a daunting process. Whether you have come straight from school, from another institution, or have been away from study for some time, there is a lot to find out about and get used to in your first year of university study.

For this reason, we have put together this website to provide you with information and links that, we hope, will help you as you begin to find your feet and have a great start to your Early Childhood studies.

We have a lot of information to share with you, but we would like previous first years to have the first say on this page. Click below to see the advice that they would give you as you begin your study at IEC:

Tip 1: Get to know each other

"Make friends so you form a support network."

"Find groups of people and form a study group."

"Get to know some older students as they can help and explain how to settle in better."

Tip 2: Organise your time

"Plan, plan, plan! Make yourself a calendar."

"Make a timetable and stick to it. ... Don't leave assignments until just before due - work on them slowly over weeks. "

"Study at least a bit every day ... get interested and incorporate uni life into your everyday life."

Tip 3: Communicate with your lecturers

"Don't be scared to ask for help."

"If in doubt, ask for advice. The teachers are more than happy to help you out."

"You CAN do it. If you are struggling - talk before you walk."

Tip 4: Work progressively

"Don't get behind! Missing one lecture makes it difficult to catch up!

"Actually read the assigned readings, you will get much more understanding of the subject if you keep on top of them and [you won't] feel lost listening to the lectures."

"Begin work earlier rather than late."

Tip 5: Get to know MQ support services

"Build up your academic writing skills ... Do a writing skills course so that you get better marks."

"Go to all the workshops that the uni offers as they are extremely helpful and will guide you during uni life."

"Access the available support such as workshops. Do not be afraid to ask questions."
