Profile

Dr Kathy Cologon lectures in Inclusive Early Childhood Education at the Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University. Kathy has a particular interest in research and practice relating to the development and support of inclusive education, with a view towards greater recognition of the rights of all children.

Prior to entering academia, Kathy worked in mainstream school and prior to school settings and developed and implemented early intervention and inclusive early childhood programs. In these roles, Kathy collaborated with families, teachers and therapists to support the inclusion of young children who experience disability. In her research, Kathy continues to work closely with families, early childhood professionals and policy makers across a range of different services in Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

The crux of what drives Kathy's research is a belief in the equality of all human beings and recognition that this has particular implications for the role of education and teacher education. Through her research Kathy seeks to contribute to the growing development of knowledge and understanding regarding how to provide effective opportunities to enable all children to flourish as valued community members. This requires challenging normative and deficit assumptions and engaging with practical issues relating to children's rights and social inclusion for all young children, particularly children who experience disability.

Kathy's current research projects focus on three key areas:

  1. Understandings of, attitudes towards and experiences of inclusion and inclusive education
  2. Facilitating learning through developing effective educational strategies
  3. Building inclusive communities.

Taken together, these research areas contribute to a holistic approach to increasing opportunities and outcomes for young children.

Inclusion in early childhood has the capacity to enable all children to flourish. However, inclusive education is yet to become a reality for many children across the world. In current research Kathy is seeking to generate discussion about notions of 'exclusion', 'inclusion' and 'inclusive education' and the factors that break down barriers to the realisation of inclusion in education. This research contributes evidence to inform policy and practice in early childhood education.

Community Outreach

Since moving into academia I have continued my involvement with community organisations in a range of ways. I have continued to deliver and facilitate workshops and invited and keynote addresses in Australia and overseas to teachers, families, community organisations, policy makers and government bodies on a range of topics centred on facilitating inclusion in early childhood. I am particularly interested in supporting professional development in regards to understanding and bringing about inclusive practice, facilitating effective communication, engaging in early literacy and numeracy experiences and implementing early intervention through play. I served as Director on the Board of Lifestart Early Childhood Intervention and School Age Services, Sydney for a number of years. I have written and contributed to numerous submissions, presentations and documents for consideration in policy development. In addition to publishing in peer-reviewed research publications, I have contributed to international professional publications. I also contribute to research scholarship as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals and conferences. I am a qualified Key Word Sign presenter, with a particular interest in supporting those working or living with young children to learn and implement sign.
